Surrey celebrates a University-first with permanent rainbow crossing initiative

The University of Surrey is proud to be the first UK University to introduce a permanent ‘rainbow crossing’ on campus. The crossing, on the University’s main Stag Hill campus, is a vibrant symbol of solidarity and an expression of commitment to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

 

Signifying equality, diversity and inclusion, the pelican crossing has been painted to represent the internationally recognised gay pride flag, celebrated as a symbol for peace.

 

The project was championed by members of the University’s Rainbow Network – a diverse, vibrant and forward-thinking group of staff committed to awareness raising – and the student-led LGBT+ Society is delighted that the crossing was installed in time to welcome students to campus for the start of the new academic year.

 

Michael Hassell, Equality and Diversity Adviser at the University, said: “This is a great way to demonstrate the University of Surrey’s commitment to our LGBT community. The crossing is at the main entrance to the University’s Stag Hill campus, and its prime location makes it one of the first landmarks visitors will see, so no one will be left in any doubt about the University’s firm support for inclusivity.”
