Winners announced as Mayor’s Awards for Access celebrates 15 years

9th October 2018

Ten local organisations and individuals have been recognised for their dedication to making the borough a more accessible place for all at this year’s Mayor’s Awards for Access. The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford Museum and Guildford Library were among those picking up awards at a ceremony at The Park Barn Day Centre last night (3 October).

The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Mike Parsons says: “It’s always inspiring to see the hard work that goes on, often behind the scenes, to ensure that local venues and activities are accessible to everyone in our borough. I was particularly pleased to see Guildford Museum recognised for their poetry workshop for people with visual impairments, run with Sight for Surrey.”

Gemma Roulston, Vice Chair of the Guildford Access Group adds: “It was a very good evening, where we celebrated the 40th year of the Guildford Access Group, and 15 years of the Mayor’s Award for Access. It was great to have so many people there and many nominations. Our hope is that the existence of the awards will encourage other businesses, groups and NHS services to go that extra mile for access. Everyone regardless of whether they have a disability or not, benefits from good access to buildings and shops. Disabled people have spending power, please encourage us to spend it with you by having good access.”

The categories for this year’s awards were:

– Accessible Premises Awards – nine winners including a Gold for the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre
– Service to the Community Awards – Guildford Museum, Guildford Library, Rock Choir, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Voluntary Action South West Surrey
– Customer Service Awards – Tesco (Burpham) and Sainsburys
