London Gatwick reports strong start to 2024
22nd August 2024
Today, London Gatwick has published its financial results for the first six months of 2024, showing a strong start to the year as demand continues to recover post-pandemic.
In the first six months of the year, we reported:
- 19.9 million passengers travelling through the airport, an increase of 7.7% compared to the same period in 2023
- Revenue totalling £488 million, roughly half from aeronautical charges and half from retail and parking, with net profit at £106 million
We are likely to see the airport reach 2019 levels for short-haul passengers in the second half of this year. We continue to expand our long-haul network and choice for passengers, now connecting the South East to key cities across China and India and boosting the UK’s international connectivity.
We are experiencing one of our busiest summers yet and by working closely with our airport partners, we ensured a reliable and enjoyable experience for our passengers, evidenced by us meeting 100% of our service measures. Our teams have worked incredibly hard to achieve these results.
Longer-term, we continue to implement our Decade of Change sustainability policy through to 2030. We recently announced the London Gatwick Hydrogen Hub – a partnership with Airbus, easyJet and Air Products – as a significant first step towards achieving zero-carbon flights. This builds on London Gatwick’s existing commitment to be net zero for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 and other initiatives announced earlier in the year, such as the opening of the GRIDSERVE electric vehicle charging forecourt and swapping diesel for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in airport vehicles, which will save more than 950 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.
In addition to investing in sustainability initiatives, we are also supporting a range of local organisations investing £250,000 across Sussex, Surrey and Kent through the independent Gatwick Airport Community Trust. Organisations still have time to apply before the deadlines next month for the latest round of applications (see link here). This is in addition to funding provided directly by the Gatwick Foundation Fund, which also supports good causes locally.
The examination phase of the Development Consent Order planning process for our Northern Runway Project is due to conclude later this month, at which point the Planning Inspectorate will have three months to make a recommendation.
