Is Your Business Ready to Grow Without You?
4th September 2026
For many business owners, being at the centre of the business is a sign of success. You
built the relationships, won the clients, made the difficult decisions and drove the
growth.
But what happens when the business becomes too dependent on you?
Founder dependency can become a hidden barrier to growth — and ultimately to the
value and future of the business. A company may be profitable today, but if key
decisions, customer relationships and critical knowledge all sit with one person, how
scalable is it really?
That was the focus of a recent Surrey Chambers of Commerce webinar with business
growth and exit specialist Mike Turner.
From founder-led to business-led
Mike introduced a useful distinction: is your business a “practice” or an “asset”?
A practice relies heavily on its founder or key individuals. An asset has the people,
processes, knowledge and leadership capability to operate without them. Buyers are
naturally more attracted to businesses that can demonstrate this independence.
So, where should business owners start?
A practical six-point check
Consider your business across six areas:
1. Leadership – Can your senior team make important decisions without you?
2. Customers – Do clients have relationships with the business, or primarily with you?
3. Knowledge – Is critical knowledge documented and shared, or sitting in people’s
heads?
4. Processes – Could someone else understand how the business operates without
you explaining it?
5. Talent – If a key person left tomorrow, could someone step into their role?
6. Accountability – Do your people identify and solve problems themselves, or wait for
direction?
These aren’t just questions for owners planning to sell. They are questions for any
business looking to grow sustainably.
The 90-day test
Here’s a simple challenge from Mike:
What would happen if you disappeared from the business for 90 days?
Would your team continue making decisions, serving customers and solving problems
— or would everything start waiting for you?
If the answer isn’t quite where you want it to be, that’s not a failure. It’s an opportunity to
identify where the business needs to become stronger and more independent.
What’s your next step?
You don’t need to be planning an exit to start preparing for one.
Building stronger leadership, transferable knowledge and robust processes gives you
something every business owner should have: choice.
Choice over how quickly you grow.
Choice over how involved you remain.
And, ultimately, choice over what happens next.
