Woking Theatres and Cinema is entering an exciting new chapter as John-Jackson (JJ) Almond prepares to step into a new global role within ATG Entertainment, and we welcome Laura McMillan as our new Venue Director. Following a transition period, the official handover is expected to take place in early May 2025.
Laura McMillan has been a driving force in the arts industry for nearly 15 years. She played a pivotal role in Coventry’s successful bid to become UK City of Culture 2021 before serving as Director of Audience Strategy. Most recently, she has been the Theatre Director of the Grand Opera House York (an ATG Entertainment-owned venue), where she has led the team through record-breaking years since its relaunch in 2022.
In her new role, Laura will oversee Woking’s three venues: New Victoria Theatre, Rhoda McGaw Theatre, and Nova Cinema, ensuring their continued growth and success.
On her appointment, Laura McMillan said:
“I am thrilled to take over as Venue Director at Woking Theatres and Cinema. The venue is a core part of the cultural community, and I can’t wait to collaborate with producers, artists, and creatives to create unforgettable experiences for our audiences. As we enter this exciting new chapter, I look forward to working with the Woking team and our partners to elevate theatre, cinema, and culture in the heart of Woking”.
John-Jackson Almond, who has led Woking Theatres and Cinemas with dedication and vision for the last three years, will be stepping into the role of Group Head of Concepts for ATG Entertainment. Reflecting on the leadership transition, JJ said:
“It’s an exciting move for me to start working as the Group Head of Concepts in a brand-new global role for ATG Entertainment. It is also a great privilege for me to announce Laura McMillan as the new venue leader for our theatres and cinema in Woking. Laura has been a personal and professional colleague of mine for almost a decade, and she is an exceptional and visionary leader. She is exactly what Woking needs to execute ATG Entertainment’s investment in the venue and drive even greater success in this next exciting chapter for culture and inward investment in the town and wider borough”.
Laura’s appointment comes at a pivotal time as Woking Theatres and Cinema embarks on an exciting period of transformation. Her passion for theatre and film, coupled with her extensive leadership experience, will help shape the venue’s future, ensuring it continues to thrive as a cultural hub.
