Marking 100 years since the end of the First World War: Guildford remembers

Armistice Day on Remembrance Sunday, 11 November, marks 100 years since the end of the First World War.
Guildford will commemorate the centenary on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, with a procession, church service and wreath-laying in the Castle Grounds. Veterans, cadets and guests will be present.
The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Mike Parsons, will begin by joining Brigadier Paul Evans OBE DL laying flowers under the VC Stones in Tunsgate, before the procession to Holy Trinity Church.
The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Mike Parsons says:
“We will forever remember those who lost their lives in war. Remembrance Day is an important part of history for the nation and Guildford. It’s important that we continue to honour the bravery of those service men and women who fought on behalf of our freedom.”
Special arrangements have been made to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. There will be an outdoor service observing the Armistice two minute silence at 11am in the Castle Grounds. Please note no maroon will be fired to mark the beginning and end of the silence.
Other commemorative events are being held in the borough until 11 November to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
We are the proud sponsors of Concert for Peace being organised by the Vivace Chorus at G Live on Saturday 10 November. The concert will be similar to the Festival of Remembrance held at the Royal Albert Hall, and will feature music from Vivace Chorus and the Friary Guildford Band, along with readings by Dame Penelope Keith, HM Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and Col. Patrick Crowley. There will be a military bugler to play The Last Post and an atmospheric and moving poppy drop. Alongside the concert, there will be an afternoon of free events at G Live to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Other free events at G Live include the film ‘Guildford in the Great War’, Gordon’s Pipe & Drum band, Special Sound Installation – Learning to Fly and WW1 re-enactment group.
Cllr Mike Parsons adds:
“It’s great to see so many events in Guildford honouring those who sacrificed themselves in the Great War. It is a countless reminder of the bravery that took place all those years ago.”
There will be an early temporary road closure from 8am to 12 noon on the High Street as well as others during the morning affecting some town centre roads. Please check our website before you travel.
