Improved Greeno Centre moves one step closer
3rd October 2018
Planning permission has recently been granted for a ground floor extension to the Greeno Centre in Shepperton.
The enlarged space will enable the Council to expand the Opal Group which is for people who have additional support needs. The group meet daily from 10am – 3pm and provides an invaluable service for local residents. This new space will also free up the existing lounge at the Centre so other users have an area where they can relax if they do not wish to take part in the activities on offer. It is anticipated that the work will be completed in spring 2019.
Cllr Maureen Attewell, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “An improved and enlarged facility will enable the Council to expand the support that it provides for members of the community who need additional support. The Opal Group in particular is a much valued service which enables people to maintain a degree of independence which might not otherwise be the case.”
Cllr Ian Harvey, Leader of the Council, said: “In a time of ever-shrinking budgets, the Council’s strategy of investing in commercial properties to deliver sustainable income streams to help sustain services is paying dividends. Our acquisitions last year ensured that we as a Council could not only balance the books and leave reserves untouched, but also commit significant funds to improving services, including this expansion of the Greeno Centre. We are re-investing our money in services for our community, which is what a Council should all be about.”
The Centre provides a whole range of services and activities designed to promote mental and physical wellbeing. For more details visit www.spelthorne.gov.uk/greenocentre
