Government backs businesses with new guidance to get employment law changes right

  • Reforms to be introduced gradually over a two-year timeline to help employers get these changes right.

Ministers have today (Tuesday 3 February) rolled out new support to help British businesses, ahead of new changes to employment law coming into effect from April.

The move follows the passing of the Employment Rights Act 2025, which will introduce reforms that form a fairer, base level of protections in line with those already in place in many workplaces across the country. This recognises that many employers understand the productivity and retention benefits of better rights at work.

The rollout of this support comes ahead of changes taking place from later this year, pointing the UK’s 1.4 million employers to business.gov.uk/employment-changes, a new online resource offering free practical guidance and support on what the changes mean and how to prepare. Content will include clear timelines, a summary of key changes and actions to take, and links to additional guidelines.

From April, Statutory Sick Pay will become payable from the first day of sickness absence, alongside new day one rights for parental leave and paternity leave.

Employment Rights Minister Kate Dearden said: 

“Creating a modern, fair and dynamic labour market is central to this Government’s plan for growth. We want to make it easier for employers to find the people they need, while ensuring that work pays and feels secure.

“Through clear guidance, we are giving businesses the practical support they need to understand these changes and get things right first time.

“These reforms benefit everyone. By improving fairness and security at work, we boost productivity, strengthen retention and support businesses to succeed – helping to drive a stronger economy for the future.”

Nearly 350 engagements have taken place with businesses throughout the development of the Plan to Make Work Pay, with further consultation to come as implementation progresses. This crucial engagement is helping to shape both the reforms and the guidance being offered, giving employers the information they need to implement changes as effectively as possible.

Further free support is available, with Acas and sector bodies standing ready to help with implementation.
