Applications open to help fund local community projects

13th December 2024

Spelthorne Borough Council is now open for applications for funding through the 2024-2025 Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) for local community projects and improvements.

Local Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funds are available to help fund local community projects to help address the impacts of new development. CIL is money raised from developments to help fund the infrastructure needed to mitigate the impacts of extra homes.

The 2023-2024 local CIL spending round saw funding of almost £60,000 committed to a range of community-based projects, from a new roof for a Scout hut to improved disabled access for a local swimming club. In the past, projects such as playground equipment in local schools and sports clubs, to community building improvements and investment in CCTV to tackle anti-social behaviour have been funded.

The deadline for this round of applications is 31 March 2025. Decisions will be made by local spending boards, comprising all Ward Councillors, for each area in the Borough.

Cllr Malcolm Beecher, Chair of Environment and Sustainability Committee said: “We want to ensure developments in Spelthorne can benefit everyone, so we’ve allocated over a third of CIL funding raised from new developments to go towards projects which aim to support local growth and benefit our communities. Last year’s funding demonstrated that Spelthorne passionately cares about investing in our communities. I would encourage all community groups to consider any improvement works they have planned and find out if the project would be suitable for CIL funding.”
