Apprenticeships

Why Your Business Should Get Involved with Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a powerful way for employers to attract new talent, develop existing staff, and address skills shortages within their business. They combine paid employment with high-quality training, allowing apprentices to earn while they learn and work towards a nationally recognised qualification, all while contributing to your organisation’s success.

Recent Government Reforms Supporting Employers

As of 18 March 2024, the Prime Minister announced a series of reforms to make it easier for businesses, especially SMEs, to take on apprentices and reduce administrative burdens.

Since 1 April 2024, the Government:

  • Fully funds apprenticeships in small businesses by covering the entire cost of training for apprentices aged up to 21.
  • Increased levy transfer allowances for larger employers, enabling them to pass on up to 50% (previously 25%) of their unused apprenticeship funds to smaller businesses, helping more firms recruit apprentices and plug vital skills gaps.

These reforms mean there’s never been a better time for employers to get involved in apprenticeship programmes.

What Is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid job that combines practical, hands-on experience with structured learning. Apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours in off-the-job training through a college, university, or approved training provider. On completion, they receive a nationally recognised qualification.

Each apprenticeship includes:

  • Paid employment with holiday entitlement
  • Real workplace experience and mentoring
  • At least 20% off-the-job training
  • A formal assessment leading to a recognised qualification
